When we experience traumatic or stressful experiences, our nervous system becomes overwhelmed. The brain becomes "stuck" in this cycle and is not able to process information effectively, which causes memories to be stored improperly.
Although the event is in the past, the body and brain still believes the event to be dangerous so the sympathetic nervous system continues to be activated. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess through past events that contribute to high levels of distress.
After an EMDR treatment, you will notice a more regulated nervous and emotional systemleading to a sense of calm.
